It's home to the oldest recognized LGBTQ+ neighborhood in the country, but the real story runs wider than any single strip — it stretches from lesbian-owned cocktail bars in Andersonville to the Black-led, trans-led community centers of the South Side. This is a city where queer history and queer futures are being written at the same time. Where the community actually hangs out
Northalsted (formerly Boystown)
The oldest officially recognized LGBTQ+ district in the U.S. Rainbow pylons line North Halsted Street, and the video bars, dance clubs, and patios run late. It's historically been a white-centered scene, so we highlight the spots within it actively making room for queer and trans people of color.
Andersonville
A more relaxed neighborhood north of the city center. Tree-lined, walkable, and home to some of the most welcoming queer-owned businesses in Chicago, including Black woman-owned Nobody's Darling.
Uptown & Rogers Park
Diverse, more affordable, and increasingly where younger and more racially mixed queer communities gather away from the tourist strips.
The South Side (Hyde Park, South Shore, Bronzeville)
The heart of Black queer Chicago, home to the organizing energy of Black Pride and Brave Space Alliance, plus beloved spaces like Club Escape.

Safety notes
- •Chicago is welcoming, but like any big city, awareness matters — especially for trans and gender-nonconforming travelers moving between neighborhoods late at night.
- •Stick to well-traveled streets in Northalsted and Andersonville after dark.
- •Lean on rideshare when traveling between the North and South Sides.
- •Black Pride is a festival and year-round movement creating space for Black and brown LGBTQI+ folks to live out loud, including women-of-color-centered events.
Best time to visit
Summer is Chicago's queer high season — June for the Pride Parade and Pride Fest in Northalsted, August for Northalsted Market Days, and Memorial Day weekend for International Mr. Leather.
Getting around
The CTA Red Line connects Northalsted, Andersonville (via Berwyn), Uptown, and the South Side. Rideshare is the safest bet late at night, especially between the North and South Sides.

- Black Pride — a Black- and brown-centered Pride celebration, anchored by community, music by queer Black artists, and youth- and adult-friendly programming
- Northalsted Market Days (August) — one of the largest street festivals in the Midwest, with live music, drag, and dancing
- International Mr. Leather (IML) — the global leather, kink, and fetish community gathers in Chicago each year for competitions, markets, and events
- Chicago Pride Parade & Pride Fest (June) — the large-scale citywide celebration centered in Northalsted
- Brave Space Alliance events — drag, burlesque, live music, and fundraisers throughout the year supporting Black, trans, and LGB+ communities
