Yes — Chicago is one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly big cities in the United States, with legal protections at both the city and state level. Northalsted (Boystown), Andersonville and Edgewater are comfortable to walk as a visibly queer person, day or night. As in any large city, the practical risks are ordinary urban ones — late-night transit, unfamiliar blocks — rather than anti-queer hostility.
Yes. Illinois has statewide nondiscrimination protections and Chicago has the country's first officially recognized gay neighborhood. Northalsted, Andersonville and Edgewater are the easiest areas to base yourself. Use normal big-city awareness moving between neighborhoods late at night, especially alone.
Chicago is one of the stronger US cities for trans travelers — Illinois protects gender identity in law and gender-affirming care is legal and available. Trans and gender-nonconforming visitors still report more staring on late-night transit, so a rideshare between neighborhoods after midnight is worth the money.
